did not send a standalone, “Happy Thanksgiving” message to my newsletter subscribers.

(I know, today is in fact Thanksgiving and I’m sending you this message. I’m trying to be ironic.)

There are a few problems with sending something like this…

#1. It’s automated. No matter what I say, you know I didn’t make the effort to reach you personally. It’s the email equivalent of “Have a nice day” printed on your grocery store receipt.

#2. Lots of people do this kind of thing on major holidays. So I’ve just chosen a day where, by definition, I won’t stand out.

#3. There is no value given to you, the reader. Unlike my newsletter which is intended to help readers live their lives or do their jobs better, there’s nothing here. By sending this, I am simply prompting you to unsubscribe forever.

#4. I sound tone deaf to the non-Americans on my list who don’t even celebrate this holiday today (or, possibly, ever).

Anyway, wishing you and yours a happy Thanksgiving! Not that this is intended to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving in any way.
